Meet our Pastors.
Lead Pastors Shawn & Elisa Cooper
“You will plant a church.” That was the phrase God spoke to us in a cafeteria in Bible college. For 13 years, we carried that assignment in our hearts. During that season, God stretched our faith, brought clarity to our calling, grew us spiritually, and ignited a desire in our hearts to obey His will for our lives, no matter the cost. Fast forward—Vertical Chapel became a reality on February 23, 2014. We launched with nothing more than a promise from God, the support of ARC, and an incredible team of people with enough faith to believe in God for the impossible. To this day, we are still leading Vertical together, still watching God move, and still seeing lives changed.
Our greatest ministry is our family. We believe that what happens at home is more important than what happens at church. For Vertical to be truly healthy, it starts first in our home. We have been married for 17 years and have three amazing kids— Layton, London, and Lola. We love family adventures, all things Dallas Cowboys, and doing life together. As a family church, our family is our ultimate legacy.
This is home. Vertical exists to help you and your family follow Jesus, live free, grow deep, and serve others. Everyone who comes through our doors is important to us because each person, including you, is important to God. This is a home for broken people who need Jesus. We hope you’ll join us.
Moving Forward,
Pastor Shawn & Elisa

Our beliefs.
-
We believe in one God, Creator of all things, holy, infinitely perfect, and eternally existing in a loving unity of three equally divine persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Having limitless knowledge and sovereign power, God has graciously purposed from eternity to redeem a people for Himself and to make all things new for His own glory (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10).
-
We believe that God has spoken in the Scriptures, both The Old Testament and The New Testament, through the words of human authors. As the verbally inspired Word of God, the Bible is without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for salvation, and the ultimate authority by which every realm of human knowledge and endeavor should be judged. Therefore, it is to be believed in all that it teaches, obeyed in all that it requires, and trusted in all that it promises (Proverbs 30:5; Romans 16:25-26; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21).
-
We believe that God created Adam and Eve in His image, but they sinned when tempted by Satan. In union with Adam, human beings are sinners by nature and by choice, alienated from God, and under His wrath. Only through God’s saving work in Jesus Christ can we be rescued, reconciled, and renewed (Genesis 1:26-27, 3:1-7; Romans 5:12; Ephesians 2:1-7).
-
We believe there is one God, who exists in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and co-eternal (Genesis 1:26; Isaiah 9:6; Matthew 3:16-17, 28:19; Luke 1:35; Hebrews 3:7-11; 1 John 5:7).
-
We believe that Jesus Christ is God incarnate, fully God and fully Man, one person in two natures. Jesus, Israel’s promised Messiah, was conceived through the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He lived a sinless life, was crucified under Pontius Pilate, arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father as our High Priest and advocate (Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-14, 20:28; Philippians 2:5-6; 1 Timothy 2:5, 3:16).
-
We believe that the Holy Spirit, in all that He does, glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of its guilt. He regenerates sinners, and in Him they are baptized into union with Christ and adopted as heirs in the family of God. He also indwells, illuminates, guides, equips, and empowers believers for Christ-like living and service (John 16:8-11, 14:26; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:15-16; 1 Corinthians 12:13).
-
We believe all the spiritual gifts are still active today. These "grace gifts" are given by the Holy Spirit to build and sanctify His church, prove Jesus' resurrection is real, and to confirm the power of His gospel. These gifts are clearly outlined in the Bible and must always operate within biblical parameters. All Christians are commanded to earnestly desire and seek these gifts (Romans 1:11, 12:4-8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31, 14:1-40; Ephesians 4:16; 2 Timothy 1:5-16, 4:14; Hebrews 2:4; 1 Peter 4:10).
-
We believe we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Salvation is not a result of good works or of any human efforts but is the free, unmerited favor of God offered to all (John 3:16-17; Acts 16:31; Romans 10:9-10; Galatians 2:16, 3:8; Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5;; Hebrews 9:22).
-
We believe repentance is the commitment to turn from sin to God. When we surrender Lordship to God, we receive forgiveness, are born again by the regeneration of the Holy Spirit, and are made completely new in Jesus (Acts 2:21, 3:19; 2 Corinthians 5:17; 1 John 1:9).
-
We believe the Church is the Body of Christ. God dwells in every Christian through the Holy Spirit and empowers His people to fulfill Jesus' mission on the earth. Every Christian is gifted, called to serve, and is an integral part of building His Kingdom. While there are many local fellowships around the world, God ultimately sees one Church, not thousands. All believers belong to Jesus and are called to live in the Spirit of unity and love. Matthew 28:16-20; Ephesians 1:22, 2:19-22; Hebrews 12:23; John 17:11, 20-23
-
We believe that God’s justifying grace must not be separated from His sanctifying power and purpose. God commands us to love Him supremely and others sacrificially, and to live out our faith with care for one another, compassion toward the poor, and justice for the oppressed. With God’s Word, the Holy Spirit’s power, and fervent prayer in Christ’s name, we are to combat the spiritual forces of evil. In obedience to Christ’s commission, we are to make disciples among all people, always bearing witness to the gospel in word and deed (Micah 6:8; Matthew 22:37-40, 28:18-20; Ephesians 6:10-18; Titus 2:11-14; James 1:27; 1 Peter 3:15).
-
We believe Heaven and Hell are real places. Every person was created to live forever and will live either separated from God for eternity (due to sin) or secured in relationship with God (by receiving grace through faith in Jesus). To be separated from God is Hell. To be secured in relationship with Him is Heaven (John 3:16-17, 6:35, 38-40; Romans 6:23; 1 John 2:25, 5:11-13; Revelation 20:15).
-
We believe Jesus will soon return to Earth to establish His kingdom. This will occur at an undisclosed date. Until then, Jesus is building His kingdom through the Church and is sanctifying His bride for His return (Matthew 24:30, 26:63-64; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:15; Revelation 19:7-9).
-
We believe that because God our creator established marriage as a sacred institution between one man and one woman, the idea that marriage is a covenant only between one man and one woman has been the traditional definition of marriage for all of human history (“Traditional Definition of Marriage”). Because of the longstanding importance of the Traditional Definition of Marriage to humans and their relationships and communities, and, most importantly, the fact that God has ordained that marriage be between one man and one woman, as clearly conveyed in God’s inerrant Scriptures, including for example in Matthew 19:4-6 where in speaking about marriage Jesus referred to the fact that “He which made them at the beginning made them male and female,” the Church hereby creates this policy, which shall be known as the “Marriage Policy” (Genesis 2:24; Mark 10:6-9; Ephesians 5:31-32).
Under this Church’s Marriage Policy, the Traditional Definition of Marriage is the only definition of marriage that will be recognized or accepted. Further, we believe that legitimate sexual relations are solely exercised within marriage. Therefore, sexual activities outside of marriage, including but not limited to adultery, premarital sex, homosexuality, and pedophilia, are inconsistent with the teaching of the Bible and the Church. Additionally, lascivious conduct, transgender behavior, and the creation and/or distribution and/or viewing of pornography are incompatible with the biblical witness. No director, officer, employee, servant, agent, or any person, corporation, organization, or entity under the direction or control of this Church shall commit any act or omission, or make any decision whatsoever, that would be inconsistent with, or that could be perceived by any person to be inconsistent with the Church’s teachings on marriage or sexuality pursuant to Article 2.02 of these Bylaws, in strict adherence to the Traditional Definition of Marriage (Matthew 5:27-28; 1 Corinthians 6:18-20; Ephesians 5:3; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5; Hebrews 13:4).
This Church’s Marriage Policy specifically prohibits acts or omissions, including but not limited to permitting any Church assets or property, whether real property, personal property, intangible property, or any property or asset of any kind that is subject to the direction or control of the Church, to be used in any manner that would be or could be perceived by any person to be inconsistent with this Church’s Marriage Policy or the Traditional Definition of Marriage, including but not limited to permitting any church facilities to be used by any person, organization, corporation, or group that would or might use such facilities to convey, intentionally or by implication, what might be perceived as a favorable impression about any definition of marriage other than the Traditional Definition of Marriage (1 Corinthians 6:19-20; Colossians 3:17; 1 Peter 4:10-11).
We believe this Church’s Marriage Policy is based upon God’s will for human life as conveyed to us through the Holy Scriptures, upon which this Church has been founded and anchored, and this Marriage Policy shall not be subject to change through popular vote; referendum; prevailing opinion of members or the general public; influence of or interpretation by any government authority, agency, or official action; or legal developments on the local, state, or federal level (Psalm 119:89; Isaiah 40:8; Acts 5:29; Romans 12:2).
-
The Bible commands every believer to be baptized. Baptism is a public statement and testimony of a person’s commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ. It is also a symbolic act illustrating a person’s union with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. We believe that baptism is by immersion (Matthew 28:19-20, 3:16; Mark 1:10; John 3:23; Acts 2:37-42, 8:38-39; Romans 6:3-6).
-
Communion, also referred to as “The Lord’s Supper,” shall be observed regularly as designated by the Lead Pastor. All believers are encouraged to participate in this time of remembrance and celebration of the death of Jesus Christ as long as they carefully examine themselves so that they do not take communion in an unworthy manner (Matthew 26:26-29; Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:17-34).
